Daughter of the River

Brazil, 2026, Documentary, 18 min 42 sec

21-26 Nov, 6:00PM

Ten years after one of the most devastating environmental disasters in Brazilian history, ten-year-old Leidiane leaves her home in the town of Rio Doce to buy bread. During her seemingly ordinary journey, she encounters traditions that once formed part of everyday life along the river but have become unfamiliar to her generation. A traditional riverside fisherman introduces her to an elderly gold washer, revealing livelihoods and cultural practices that existed in the region for centuries before the Fundão dam collapse transformed the river and the communities surrounding it. Performed by non-professional actors who were directly affected by the disaster, Daughter of the River is an intimate reflection on environmental loss, memory, cultural heritage and a generation growing up in the aftermath of irreversible change.
