My Lost Country
Documentary
Through an intimate exploration of her father’s life, filmmaker Ishtar Yasin preserves the memory of Iraqi theatre director Mohsen Sadoon Yasin, tracing a family story shaped by art, exile and the longing for home. A student and professor at the Baghdad Institute of Fine Arts, Mohsen married Chilean dancer Elena Gutiérrez in Baghdad. During Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship, his brother Rassul was imprisoned and much of his family scattered across the world. Unable to return to live in Iraq, Mohsen carried his homeland with him through his memories, humanist beliefs and political theatre. Weaving together personal history, dreams and mythology, My Lost Country explores the love between a father and daughter against a backdrop of political and social upheaval. Spanning continents and generations, the documentary reflects on displacement, belonging and the shared humanity that connects us across borders.
