Amid the rivers, mountains and dense vegetation of San José de Maipo, a painful history lies beneath the rural landscape. Through testimonies, Rural Zone examines accounts of torture, abuse and murder at Las Melosas, a Chilean police detention centre used during Augusto Pinochet’s regime. These narratives confront the enduring impact of political violence and the impossibility of fully repairing the suffering inflicted. Drawing a stark connection between the natural surroundings and the atrocities remembered within them, the documentary reflects on national memory, justice and the need to bear witness to an irreparable past.
